Autobiographical

Maybe I haven't been the coolest kid in class. I have intimidated professors and classmates with my intelligence and creativity. I have rode the wave of not fitting in and standing out. I tend to offend people with my art and writing.

At a poetry reading last month, I said "New Englanders are just as crazy as Californians and New Yorkers." The poet who came next read a rhyming poem about gophers in his backyard and the love of nature. I told him I liked his stuff, which I did. He only scoffed. He thought I must have been a cruel nature-hating cynic. But, hey! I love nature too.

I have done some extensive travel fueled by many temporary part time and pointless jobs. Usually the money has gotten me a wealth of experience and ideas, but has left me broke listening for opportunity. I keep getting pulled back to Connecticut, my ancestral black hole where I tend to live like a monk. I have been attracted to New York my whole life yet never been able to make the move.

I am hugely open to new ideas, experiences. Its adult, I think, and the nature of Art. I think that rules are meant to be broken, especially in the Arts, and I have knowingly pursued this in my Art. Sometimes, though, I get nervous, because I feel like there is so much on the line all the time.

I write. I have a finished science fiction novel. I have a few good short screenplays. I write stories where the characters wrestle with the power of the human condition. Older folks in the class tell me they “don’t get it.” Yet, my professor in the MFA program says “excellent” when describing my work. I don’t get down, I think of Basquiat and Obama. I think I just really need a platform, an audience, and a chance.

The work on my site is from my “LA” style which I developed over the two years that I lived there. “Duke” is a good example of it. Before that, I was concentrated on Pop and abstraction. I am now, getting back to oil painting in a new series while making short videos.

Most of the time I can be found reading everything and anything from Final Crisis to Nine Stories by JD Salinger. I love movies, old, new, good, bad. Right now I’m on a Cronenberg binge. I love the work of Ai Weiwei, Damien Hirst, though its not fashionable to say so anymore, and Cy Twombly and Joan Mitchell. I don’t hate any art, I absorb it all. I am totally enamored by Muse, RHCP, The Dead Weather, The Beatles, and The Mars Volta. Thanks.

I am at the library sing the internet. It seems like I have talked to so many people and that I am a step away from my dreams. Is this how everyone feels in LA? I think so. The homeless lady I talked to still loves this town, though she is cynical as hell. She is obsessed about the number 13. She met Jimmy Stewart. I told her I just came out here, she said, "intentionally?" It made me laugh.

the problem with the nature of time

sure, i fall in love quick, sure.
its only because love has been fleeting my entire life.
and disappointment has hung around like a disease.

i feel like all the love i give gets returned with the receipt.
not even a simple 'no thanks.'
not even in childhood,
old friends who know me well warm my grisly heart.

the problem of time is that looking back, its always blurred.
we're always in now, whether she might actually want to look at the stars with me,
or be in bed looking at the stars in her eyes.

no time for me?
what about 9pm to 3am? what about now? what about all the time spent
painting? what about a spare couple of minutes? what about wasted time?
what about making time.
its fucked up because love shouldnt be scheduled.
i havent been, but im still trying to punch in.
not, not, not, not, not, not
maybe finally, she'll stop looking at me like im crazy.

or a time could be up.
or a time dulls love into like.
or a time expands love like a galaxy

my generation

i see the best minds of my generation with their audio cortexes to the grindstone. we listen hard through the clamor for opportunity.

yet, retail! college! gas tanks! the last sullied vestiges of the industrial revolution via 1950s mill work. we're left counting peanuts. not saving any cause we got to eat.

we're not service workers. its killing us. we seen the world set up by our parents working for them. the rungs have crumbled. we dont care. caring only begets a fallen crest. we know why the jetsons built up, to get away from the dregs. money. bullshit. we toss it into side projects and away.

we have not got scratch n sniff stickers in ten years. "good job!" fuck you. we get no pat on the back. our skin is thick from all the weirdness. thats why we dose. dose.

weve seen it all. the same old sarcasm, the same old cartoons. we're all critics. the world evaporates when TV is on. we pretend nothing is there.

and all i want is her in my life. because it feels right, but i know how real reality can get. its just that the alone is getting to me. she knows it all and knows what it means. happy to be free. ive been there, and know that its much better to have a friend on the raft when you hit white water. i want to tell her i hear her in music. that her gifts are the light of the world. that she is so fucking beautiful.
